While the drama playing out in the Knesset on 14 June was unsettling for its MKs, it was far more so for the people of Israel who nervously waited the results of the important vote for the Judicial Selection Committee. Common sense and a support for a secure democracy won the day.

Food for Thought. The first lesson in Alexander Harkavy’s book – first published in 1921 – is about eating dinner.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, successive waves of Jewish migration – provoked by povertypersecution and pogroms – left Eastern Europe for new lives elsewhere. Mostly Yiddish speakers, they needed to learn English and that is where Alexander Harkavy’s famed English Home Teacher came in. One such migrating family carrying this book that finally ended up in Israel is the writer’s wife’s family. This is their story.
