In the 19th and 20th centuries, successive waves of Jewish migration – provoked by poverty, persecution and pogroms – left Eastern Europe for new lives elsewhere. Mostly Yiddish speakers, they needed to learn English and that is where Alexander Harkavy’s famed English Home Teacher came in. One such migrating family carrying this book that finally ended up in Israel is the writer’s wife’s family. This is their story.
