LETTER FROM ISRAEL AT WAR – WEEK 6

I want an end to the bloodshed but ceasefires with limited shelf-life prolong the problem

By Harris Zvi Green

November 17, 2023

My dearest friends,
Thanks again for your encouragement and support. It is much appreciated.
Ariel is well on his way to a complete recovery. We get occasional text messages from our son-in-law, Amir, and our grandson, Ori. Their messages ease our concerns for their safety. We’ve heard indirectly that our other serving grandson, Omer, and his unit are fine. His wedding will have to be postponed. He insists on celebrating his special day together with all his army buddies. Our granddaughter, Linor, has chosen to extend her military service and will continue her contribution to the war effort.
Phyllis and I spent most of yesterday morning pruning loquat trees at a nearby moshav. Israel’s farmers need all the help they can get.
Friends, our family experience is not unique. At this time, Israel is focused on two objectives – dismantling the Hamas military and governing infrastructures and securing the safe release of all the hostages. We’re in this together and we’re not alone.

Must Never Happen Again. From a 9-month-year-old baby to seniors like this elderly Israeli woman from Kibbutz Kfar Azza, Gazan killer squads forcibly transport over 240 captured Israelis into captivity on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023. (Photo Hatem Ali/AP)

Since the outbreak of hostilities, Israel recognized that her window of opportunity for military action against Hamas was limited. History has proved time and time again that the West is only sympathetic towards Israel when she’s hurting and suffering. As soon as the tide changes and Israel gains control of the situation, the sympathy is replaced by animosity.
The West resents a strong and independent Israel. They really don’t want Israel to score a resounding victory over those who challenge her right to exist. They introduce double standards to the equation and Israel’s right to defend herself is compromised.
Politicians don’t win elections by taking sides in international conflicts. They are elected to serve the needs of their electorates. The last thing they need is unrest on their streets. Winning the next election is more important to them than being on the right side of history.
Israel’s enemies exploit this to their advantage. Qatar and the Islamic bloc are doing their utmost to stall Israel’s momentum by positioning themselves as brokers of unacceptable deals for the release of the hostages. Al Jazeera is working overtime to propagate the Hamas narrative and shape public opinion in too many gullible countries. Tragically, antisemitism has once again become politically correct.
In keeping with tradition, the French were the first to buckle under the pressure. President Macron visited Israel a few weeks ago to express his solidarity with Israel. Since October 7, more than 1,500 antisemitic incidents have been recorded in France. Macron is now demanding that Israel initiates a ceasefire.
A pro-Palestinian march in London this past Saturday attracted more than 500,000 demonstrators. Participants were bused in from all over the UK. Events of this scale require a major logistic effort. The costs are enormous. How long will it take for Rishi Sunak to cave in under the pressure?
Statements made by the US Secretary of State in support of Israel’s right to defend herself have deteriorated from unconditional support to veiled warnings that are becoming less and less subtle by the hour.
The call for a ceasefire is not intended to save human life. It’s intended to stall the momentum on the battlefield, to protect the Hamas leadership in Qatar and Gaza and to save what’s left of the Hamas military infrastructure for the next round of the conflict. Such a ceasefire will only result in additional rounds in the conflict that will claim thousands more lives on both sides.
The best deal contemplated by the international community for the release of the 240 Israeli hostages calls for the release of more than 6,000 Hamas terrorists including their most notorious serial killers. It’s like enabling their release from the sin-bin and allowing them to play in the future matches in a world-series event.
Friends, I’m not a militant. I don’t want revenge for the sake of revenge. I want an end to the bloodshed. I want to live in peace and to enjoy the twilight years of my life. That’s what my children want. That’s what my grandchildren deserve. That’s what my great-grandchildren expect.
The way to achieve that is not by yet another ceasefire with a limited shelf-life. These ceasefires are dead-on-arrival.

Bring them Home. While much of the world calls for a ceasefire, Israelis call for the release of its hostages.

When I read what I’ve written over the past few weeks, I ask myself whether these lines were written by the same innocent, compromising and impressionable boy born 77 years ago to parents who sincerely believed the last war had already been fought. I ask myself if this is the university student who was exposed to campus life during the turbulent sixties and who chose to embrace the values of peace, freedom, mutual tolerance and equality.
Because of the choices I made then, I believe the job must be done now. I acknowledge there’s a price to pay. But we have to do, what we have to do.
After 45 days, 240 hostages remain in captivity under the most terrible conditions. To date, the International Red Cross has not visited them or even provided a complete list of the hostages. The hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally. Once again, I appeal to you to spare a thought for the hostages and to pray for their safety.
My condolences to those mourning their nearest and dearest. My wishes for a complete and speedy recovery to the injured. May God protect our brave soldiers.

Wishing you all Shabbat Shalom and better times ahead.

Am Yisrael Chai.

A TALE OF TWO HOSPITALS

A hospital in Israel saving lives, a hospital in Gaza shielding terrorists

By Jonathan Feldstein

On October 16, I had an appointment at Jerusalem’s Shaarei Zedek hospital. There are many places in which one observes the peaceful and respectful interaction between Jews and Arabs throughout Israel, but none more than in a hospital, and no hospitals more than a Jerusalem hospital. Reflecting not just the demographic that 20% of Israel’s population are Arab citizens, and in Jerusalem about a third of the population are Arabs, one sees coexistence at every level.  There are Arab doctors and nurses treating Jewish patients, and Jewish doctors and nurses treating Arab patients. Jewish and Arab employees serve coffee, work as administrators, and clean the floors.  Together.

Saving Lives Together. Muslim and Jewish doctors working side by side at NICU, Shaare Zedek Hospital. This image represents a reality that plays out daily, in almost every hospital in Israel, where medical professionals, doctors and nurses together, regardless of religion, nationality or ethnicity. (Shaare Zedek Hospital)

I’ll never forget the scene there the day my youngest son was born. The maternity ward was particularly busy. Rotund women (the mothers of those about to become mothers) were pacing the halls. Jews and Arabs, identifiable by their respective traditional dress. Just coexisting, about to celebrate the arrival of a new baby in their family. Together.

While waiting for my appointment, I heard loud claps of what sounded like thunder outside.  I couldn’t see the weather as there were no windows, but I was sure that we have entered the rainy season and Jerusalem was being blessed by a needed rainstorm from heaven.  Until I heard the air raid siren, and an announcement throughout the hospital that everyone needed to get to the bomb shelter.  Then I realized it was not a blessing from heaven but a curse from hell, falling from the sky.

We had about 90 seconds to take cover. Jews and Arabs, all going to the same safe room. Together. We would be protected from the rockets of Hamas’ Islamic terrorists. Just as normal as it is for Jews and Arabs to coexist like this, and seek shelter together, I was mindful of how abnormal the situation actually was. Yet for the Hamas terrorists, how they did not discriminate between Jews and Arabs in who they would kill or maim. They aim for us, but killing their own is not a problem for them either.

The next day, a stray terrorist rocket hit a Gaza hospital.  Initial Hamas “reports” were 500 dead and, of course, that Israel had targeted the hospital. Fortunately, Israel is as careful about not hitting civilian targets unless they are being used as cover by the terrorists, as it is about documenting where each rocket is fired from, and where it is headed or lands.  Israel proved to the world that the rocket that hit Al-Ahli Hospital was not an Israeli rocket, even producing recordings from terrorist leaders confirming this among themselves.

(IDF photo via Reuters)

That inconvenient reality, as well as the inflated death toll ten times more than it actually was, didn’t seem to matter to much of the world media. Without checking a single fact, they parroted Hamas’ lies and propaganda, making the media culpable as well.  Sadly, just as it is normal for Jews and Arabs to coexist peacefully in Israeli hospitals, it is normal for world media to blame Israel even when facts prove the opposite.

While it’s a widely suspected that Hamas have used the hospital as a terror base, even firing at Israeli troops from within the hospital making it a legitimate target, few people in the world care more than Israel for the well-being of the patients in the hospital. It would have been easy to target the hospital with a massive Dresden-style air attack as the Allies did during WWII and wipe out the Hamas leaders as the rats in the sewer that they are. This is not what Israel did.

Rather than bombing from the air, in order to save lives of Gazan Arabs in the hospital, Israel sent in ground troops to defeat the terrorists and rescue the hostages at risk to their own lives. Even though Israel knows where the terrorists are, getting to them will require massive urban combat and certain terrorist traps not seen before.

In addition to the Hamas entrenchment under the hospital being a public secret, as well as a war crime by making their own civilians human shields, there’s another public secret that highlights Hamas’ evil.  Israeli intelligence, corroborated by the four hostages who have been released alive, have verified that in the immediate aftermath of Hamas’ 10/7 rampant massacre and kidnapping, hostages were forced to put on hospital gowns and paraded through Shifa hospital to get to the underground bunkers.

Under the Surface.  Israel Defense Forces discover the entrance to a tunnel shaft on the grounds of the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. (ISRAEL DEFENSE FORCES PHOTO)

During my hospital experience, a young woman with a warm smile came to take blood. She apologized in advance for causing me any pain before poking the needle in so gently that I barely felt it.  Before 10/7 I wouldn’t have thought twice about an Arab nurse taking my blood, or anything else.  It was all normal, part of the civil mutual respect that exists where Jews and Arabs coexist in Israel. It’s not always perfect, but it is the norm.

Sadly, as much as she caused virtually no discomfort in poking me with a needle, I could not resist my discomfort with her poking me. I don’t like that I feel this way, and I know I am not alone. But sadly, one consequence of the war is the distrust that many Israeli Jews have with and around Arabs, even those that they have known and worked with for years.  It’s not a racist thing, but based on the reality that Gazan Arabs who worked in the Jewish communities that were overrun and attacked on 10/7 actually helped the terrorists map out the communities and the very homes of the victims.

As I left the bomb shelter in Jerusalem on October 16, I was overcome by a powerful thought. What would happen if I, an Israeli Jew, were to arrive at a Palestinian Arab hospital, not necessarily in Gaza, just in Ramallah, Bethlehem, or Hebron? Would I be welcomed and cared for as a patient, or would I be lynched, and my death celebrated?

The reality is that inside or beneath Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, hit by the terrorists’ rocket the next day, there were probably Jewish hostages hidden, used as human shields. There are probably also bodies of Jewish hostages in the morgue.  All waiting for a sickening “prisoner exchange”, or to be executed as part of Hamas’ psychological terror war.

Smoking Gun. Despite the presence and denials, this photo released by the IDF shows weapons discovered at the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. (Photo IDF)

Too bad nobody in Shifa hospital seems to have any moral qualms about their being used as human shields, or the horrific treatment of the hostages hidden in the hospital, or thinks that Hamas doing so is anything other than normal.

To end this crisis, all the hostages must be released. You can sign the petition to help make this happen HERE.

he largest gathering of Jews in US history, the rally was a response to the large anti-Israel protests across the United States and the world. Clear and simple: Israel will cease its counteroffensive when Hamas ceases to be a threat to the Jewish state.

“THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF ITSELF”

Simon Wiesenthal Center accuses South Africa’s leadership of fueling antisemitism by its outrageous lies against the Jewish state

By David E. Kaplan

In South Africa, the best are its people, the worst its politicians.

This recognition was visually most evident at the 2023 World Rugby Cup final on the 28 October in France where on the one hand you had the inspiring victorious South African Springbok team and its multitude of devoted South African fans and on the other, in the VIP section on the stands – the failing President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa who with few achievements to show for himself as president, wanted to bake in the glory of his nation’s Springboks heroes. There could not be two contrasting images of absolute success and abject failure.

While the image on the TV screens of the players brought screams and applause from fans in their living rooms, the sight of Ramaphosa brought mostly grunts. For the Jews of South Africa, it was justifiably more than just “grunts”!

No longer just the anxiety about a failing economy, collapsing infrastructure, diminishing employment opportunities, rampant crime and systemic corruption, now add government-fueled antisemitism!

Targeting Jews. Despite having no permit, Hamas-supporting protesters violently attack and disrupt a pro-Israel prayer rally in Cape Town, South Africa on November 12, 2023. (photo credit: INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN EMBASSY JERUSALEM)

Some three weeks before the hoisting by the Springboks of the Webb Ellis cup in Paris, death squads from Gaza, reminiscent of Nazi “Einsatzgruppen” entered Israel’s south to murder, rape, decapitate, burn and kidnap Jews. While much of the world in the immediate aftermath were horrified and voiced their support for Israel with leaders like US president Joe Biden, UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak and French president Emmanual Macron paying condolence visits during a time of war, South Africa’s government was not only silent, but its foreign minister, Naledi Pandor called not the leadership of the victims but the perpetrators – Hamas – and offered South Africa’s support. No concern shown or any mention of the Jews massacred or kidnapped by Hamas, the ANC government then added salt to its wounding Jewish community by withdrawing its remaining diplomatic staff from its embassy in Ramat Gan citing reasons of Israel committing a “holocaust” and carrying out “Genocidal airstrikes”. One would think that with three Holocaust Museums in South Africa – Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban – the South African government would be better educated to know what a “Holocaust” and “Genocide” is and not falsely accuse Israel of either. Instead of displaying some sympathy and understanding of Israel experiencing the worst massacre of Jews since the real Holocaust – “the Shoah” – all it has done is stoke the fire of antisemitism as exhibited by anti-Israel protests on the streets of South Africa.

Violent and Vicious. Taking their cue from the Hamas terrorists, Israel supporters – one of whom was in a wheelchair – were frighteningly harassed by pro-Hamas supporters.

Interviewed by the South African Jewish Report (SAJR), a Jewish attendee to a Christian prayer gathering for Israel on Sunday 12 October on the Sea Point promenade, said:

“I’ve never experienced such vile violence and antisemitism in my life.”

He withheld his name for security concerns.

Attacked by the Hamas-supporting mob shouting “Allahu Akbar”, he “was strangled, kicked, hit, scratched, dragged, maligned, and almost pushed into the ocean.”

The coordinator of the Christian-organised prayer gathering, Vivienne Myburgh, told the SAJR that “they broke a 75-year-old man’s finger, threatened to shoot a woman,” and “stabbed a man in the arm. There were knives and guns. They burned a prayer shawl [tallis] and Israeli flags with glee. I tried to grab destroyed posters and flags, but the police told me, ‘Your life is worth more than this’, so I had to leave them.”

The message cannot be clearer than the words of PAGAD National Coordinator, Haroon Orrie, who wearing a Hamas headband, said outside the Sea Point police station:

“The time for action is here. We share one objective: to rid this country of Zionism.”

While South African Jews may pray for a variety of things, it will no longer include for the welfare of the South African government. South Africa’s Chief Rabbi, Warren Goldstein responded to the government’s evil support of Hamas by advising that the prayer for the Republic of South Africa composed by the late Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris in 1994 honouring the country’s transition to democracy, will no longer include for the government. The Chief Rabbi explained in a letter to the SAJR that:

“The [current] change is clearly due to the South African government’s ongoing support for Hamas. How can we pray for a government that supports an organisation responsible for the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust – an organisation whose official policy is to murder Jews and which poses an ongoing threat to the safety of the Jewish people and the State of Israel?”

It’s not a decision that was taken lightly,” Goldstein added, but “…when the government crosses the line and adopts a stance this immoral, we can’t in good conscience pray for them.”

Put his Foot into it. Quickly resorting to violence, this Hamas supporting protestor took his frustrations out on the Sea Point police.

It is thus understandable that the Israel office of the Jewish global human rights organization researching the Holocaust the Simon Wiesenthal Center – has weighed in releasing this press release dated 9 November 2023. It admonishes the South African government that “should be ashamed of itself” for “its outrageous accusation that Israel is committing a Holocaust against the Palestinians.”

Following the above press release, the director of the SWC and a frequent contributor to Lay of the Land, Dr. Efraim Zuroff, told the SAJR:

You must also question the impact on Jews living in South Africa. The government doesn’t feel protective towards Jewish people in South Africa even though Jews are important citizens. If there’s no protection for Jews, Jews should reassess and analyse their situation.”

South Africans have reason to be worried both in the short term about their security and in the long term about the sustainable of its community that has dropped dramatically from a high of 120,000 to hovering precariously above 40,000.

Silent on the Massacre of Jews, Vocal on Blaming Israel. Adorning a Palestinian keffiyeh, South Africa’s foreign minister, Naledi Pandor has withdrawn all South African diplomats from Israel in support of Hamas, whom she called following their massacre of Jews in southern Israel on the 7 October, 2023.

With a long-standing romance between the South African government and Hamas, coupled with its warm embrace of Iran – both committed to the destruction of the Jewish state – is it any surprise that South African Jews are wondering if their own government is not by the message it sends, inciting future pogroms?

For many of South Africa’s Jews having planted one foot out the country in Israel, the other foot is now more than ever likely to follow.

LETTER FROM ISRAEL AT WAR – WEEK 5

Among the 238 hostages in Gaza is 10-month-old Kfir Bibas. What monsters kidnap babies and what type of world supports such monsters?

By Harris Zvi Green

November 10, 2023

My dearest friends,
This past week produced some memorable family highlights for us.
On Monday evening, we saw Ariel for the first time since his injury. He is recovering nicely. Watching our 15-month-old great-granddaughter reunite and bond with her father was an emotional experience for Phyllis and I.
Ori, our eldest grandson, is stationed near the Lebanese border. He is a reservist paratrooper so if things escalate on that front, he will certainly see action. Ori’s wife is expecting their second child in around four weeks from now. Being away from home at this time, can’t be easy for either of them. We’re able to text each other and this helps alleviate some of our concerns for his safety.
On Tuesday evening, we were rewarded with a call from Omer who is currently in the thick of things with his infantry unit in Gaza. We hadn’t spoken for around four weeks so being able to talk with him in person was manna from heaven.
Like all good things, the call came to an end. And with it, the tension and anxiety returned.
Omer is scheduled to get married in three weeks’ time. My heart goes out to him and his fiancé that they are not able to share this special time together. So sad to say, but, at this time, he has much bigger things on his plate.
Our television screens are saturated with footage of the destruction and damage in Gaza. They’re still going on about the “humanitarian crisis” in Gaza despite the fact that missiles with a range of 200 kilometers fired from Gaza continue to rain down on Israeli cities.
Every day, more than 100 trucks enter Gaza with supplies of humanitarian aid including food, water and medical supplies. Israel has created a secure passage for civilians to move southwards to specifically designated safe havens.
The IDF scattered 1,524,000 pamphlets in Gaza, made 19,734 personal phone calls, processed 5,998,382 pre-recorded calls and sent 4,369.399 text messages to the residents of Gaza encouraging them to move to these safe havens. Needless to say, Hamas is doing its utmost to prevent this by setting up roadblocks and murdering those refusing to comply. They need this cannon fodder to serve as human shields.
Hamas complains it doesn’t have sufficient fuel to operate its hospitals. Yet their leaders continue to steal fuel from the hospitals to conduct their military operations from the safety of their air-conditioned bunkers.
It really bothers me that the diplomats at the UN and the news commentators don’t question and investigate these issues before condemning Israel’s conduct. The fake news and the deliberate lies put out by the Palestinian propaganda machine are accepted without question. On the other hand, information put out by the IDF has to be corroborated and investigated by independent sources.
The wave of antisemitism currently engulfing the world concerns me even more than the military might of the Iranian, Hezbollah and Hamas war machines. I fear for the safety of aging and dwindling Jewish communities around the world. Israel has a strong military and can defend herself. But Jewish communities in the Diaspora are soft and vulnerable targets for the empowered anti-Semitic thugs who rule the streets and occupy too many places of influence.
It’s not only the huge numbers of those demonstrating their support for Hamas and their genocidal fantasies that concern me. What concerns me more is that these demonstrations are taking place in major cities in Europe and North America. They’re happening on the campuses of the world’s most prestigious universities and they’re being fueled by large sections of the international media.
Those purporting to be enlightened Liberals are anything but that. Their claim to being the guardians of human rights is without foundation.

In Evil Hands. In happier times is baby Kfir Bibas with his family – father Yarden, mother Shiri and four-year-old sister Ariel  – who were all taken captive by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023 from Kibbutz Nir Oz. (Courtesy)

So who’s financing this fascist propaganda machine? Who’s providing the platform for this barrage of hate speech? Who’s coining the slogans? Spontaneity doesn’t have the resources.
Around 240 hostages remain in captivity under the most terrible conditions. Amongst them is Kfir Bibas. At the time of his being taken hostage, he was 9 months old. Kfir is now 10 months old. Who’s taking care of him? Please spare a thought for him and pray for his safety.
The International Red Cross claims to be an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict.
So where exactly is the Red Cross? Is this the “vacuum” the Secretary-General of the United Nations was referring to?
Angela Davis is an Afro-American who rose to fame in the US civil rights movement around 60 years ago. Her Wikipedia bio describes her as a Communist and a Marxist. I’m neither of those. But I do agree with what she said. “I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I’m changing the things I cannot accept”.
I’m left with no choice. Israel is left with no choice.
My condolences to those mourning their nearest and dearest. My wishes for a complete and speedy recovery to the injured. My prayers for those being held in captivity for the past 35 days and for their immediate and unconditional release. May God protect our brave soldiers.
Wishing you all Shabbat Shalom and better times ahead.

Am Yisrael Chai.

SERBIA HAS BEEN A BEACON OF SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL SINCE HAMAS’ ATTACK

As a people who suffered terribly at the hands of the Nazis and their Croatian Ustasha collaborators during World War II, Serbs feel a strong kinship with the Jewish people and the State of Israel

By Dr. EFRAIM ZUROFF and ALEKSANDAR NIKOLIC

(Courtesy of The Jerusalem Post, where first published)

In the wake of the horrendous terror rampage committed by Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, many of the most important countries in North America and Western Europe were quick to denounce the Hamas crimes and declare their unequivocal support for Israel and our right to defend ourselves against the perpetrators of the shocking crimes committed by the Palestinian terrorists.

To their credit, the leaders of the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany even traveled to Israel personally, to express their solidarity and support. At home, cultural and political iconic buildings in these and other countries were illuminated with Israeli flags.

In the eastern parts of Europe, however, expressions of support were much slower in coming. Only 12 days after the slaughter of over 1,400 mostly Israeli civilians in the most bestial manner, including infants, young children, and the elderly, did the European Parliament pass a vote which denounced the crimes unequivocally and supported Israel’s right to defend itself by an unprecedented margin of 500 votes in favor, 21 opposed, and 24 abstentions.

There is, however, one eastern European country that has taken exceptional concrete measures to demonstrate its support for Israel, and especially for the soldiers of the IDF during these last two terrible weeks. Shortly after the news of the slaughter of so many innocent Israelis reached Belgrade, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic immediately denounced the horrific crimes committed by Hamas and tied them to the painful history of the Jewish people throughout their history, especially during the Holocaust.

Needless to say, Vucic supported Israel’s right to defend itself. As the Serbian president who has done the most to commemorate the Holocaust in Serbia, and as the grandson of a victim of the Croatian Ustasha Nazi collaborators, he is well aware of the mutual suffering of Jews and Serbs (and of the Romani people) during World War II. In that respect, the history of World War II continues to resonate very strongly in Serbia, the only country in Europe in which anti-Nazi partisans (among them many Jews), by far outnumbered local Nazi collaborators.

On a more practical level, at a time when practically all the airlines from national carriers to charters and low-cost suspended their flights to and from Ben-Gurion Airport, Air Serbia, the national airline, not only continued its scheduled flights, but added special additional flights.

All four weekly flights were filled to capacity, but most important they brought home IDF soldiers living abroad, who were summoned for active service from all over Europe and North America. Air Serbia flights from New York, Chicago, and various European destinations enabled numerous soldiers to arrive “home” to join their units in a timely manner when no other options were available.

Unshakable Bond. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic whose grandfather was a victim of the Croatian Ustasha Nazi collaborators during WWII, immediately denounced the horrific crimes committed by Hamas and tied them to the painful history of the Jewish people throughout their history, especially during the Holocaust. President Vucic is seen here shaking hands with Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen at Israel’s embassy in Belgrade in July 2023.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON

In addition, the newly appointed Serbian ambassador to Israel, Miroljub Petrovic, is arriving with his wife to assume his post here in the coming week, despite the rocket attacks and the other dangers, instead of waiting for an end to the hostilities. This is another gesture of solidarity, and deep friendship from Serbia, at a time when such support is needed and much appreciated.

As a people who suffered terribly at the hands of the Nazis and their Croatian Ustasha collaborators during World War II, Serbs feel a strong kinship with the Jewish people and the State of Israel and have responded with empathy and understanding to our plight. Hvala (thank you) Belgrade!

KNOCK KNOCK

From the knock of the roof to the knock on the door  – the sights and sounds of Israel’s war  with Gaza

By Jonathan Feldstein

Knock, knock. Who’s there?” is a great way to start a timeless children’s joke, but in Israel today it has another meaning.

It’s well known and abundantly documented that for many years, one thing Israel’s military does when targeting and taking out a terrorist, there’s a policy of what’s called “a knock on the roof” where a non-lethal bomb is dropped on the roof of a building in which there is terrorist target. It may be the residence of a terrorist leader’s apartment building or the headquarters of a terrorist military or communications network. More often than not, these terrorist targets are deliberately located in apartment buildings in highly populated areas, embedded purposely within the civilian population. This is in keeping with terrorist policy to use their own civilians as human shields.

The purpose of the ‘knock on the roof’ is to warn residents to evacuate a building before a terrorist is targeted.  A positive of this policy is that it saves the lives of civilians, while the negative is that it gives terrorists an opportunity to escape. In some instances, targeting of the terrorist is so precise that it looks as if the Israeli military were highly trained surgeons, hitting the exact wall of the exact room on the exact floor in the exact apartment in which the terrorist leader is sleeping, mindful of the engineering of the rest of the building. This prevents it from collapsing entirely, and taking out the terrorist target with a level of precision unknown in modern warfare.

The surgical analogy is also appropriate because it saves lives of others nearby, or even in the same building, while eliminating the terrorist threat.

A similar policy to the knock on the roof is the dropping of leaflets, or making wide broadcasts in Arabic telling those who are not combatants to leave a particular area.  That’s happened widely as Israel prepared to enter Gaza with combat troops and tanks, targeting the terrorists, and to try rescue the 240+ hostages.  Unfortunately, not only does this also provide opportunity for terrorists to escape, especially when specific times and routes are published during which people can get out of the areas facing the toughest battles, the terrorists target these areas and people trying to flee.  It has been abundantly documented that Hamas terrorists have been blocking the evacuation routes, threatening civilians at gun point so that they may not leave, and targeting these with mortar fire to prevent average Gazans from fleeing.

Remember this when you see propaganda reports from the Hamas controlled “Gazan health ministry” about how many people have been killed.  Can you trust their numbers?  How do we know that among the actual dead and wounded they are all civilians when their terrorists wear no uniforms and hide among the actual civilians? When you see suffering of women and children, ask how many tried to flee, only to be turned back by Hamas to face certain carnage and suffering.

In Isael today, “knock” has another lethal meaning. In times of heightened conflict and war, when soldiers are actively engaged in fighting terrorists, a “knock” in Isael is something to be fearful of. There’s a whole military unit whose responsibility it is to inform families of soldiers who have been killed in combat of the death of their loved one. It’s known that the army shows up and knocks on the door.  Unlike Israel’s “knock on the roof” to save lives, this is a knock of dread.  It’s also the consequence of sending ground forces into highly populated areas to engage the terrorists face to face, precluding an actual carpet bombing, and therefore saving lives of more Gazan Palestinian Arabs, while putting our soldiers lives at risk. That’s also something to remember as the death toll of Israeli soldiers increases. Israel could simply bomb Gaza without any regard for the lives of their civilians.  Instead it sends ground troops in to engage the terrorists with precision, trying to prevent civilian casualties, yet at risk to themselves.

This week, I dropped off something at a neighbor’s house.  Naturally, instinctively, I knocked on the door.  As I heard her ask “Who is it?” I realized suddenly I should not have knocked but rang the doorbell.  Why?  Her son is in a combat unit, in Gaza now. Any knock on the door can create fear.

Last week, I hosted conversation as an episode of the “Inspiration from Zion” podcast.  It was a with young Israeli women whose husbands have been called up into reserves and have been away from home, and their families, for most of the month.  There were several recurring themes about how these women have been holding up the home front while their husbands are on the front line.  But one of them, perhaps the scariest, is the fear of getting the knock on the door. It’s something they understand that their children do not, and makes keeping their kids safe and protected while coping with their own stresses all the more challenging.

On a personal note, recently my combat unit soldier son-in-law was promoted to Major.  His commanding officer called my daughter to share the news.  When my daughter saw who was calling her face went white and her blood pressure dropped. She didn’t know about the promotion, so a call from the commanding officer in the midst of a war, rightly, made her frightened.  It was good they could speak about that too.  However, my son-in-law’s commanding officer said, perhaps to be comforting or perhaps to deflect this reality with humor, “Don’t worry, if something happened, you’d get a knock on the door, not a phone call.”

“Knock, knock,” has different meanings in Israel at war. One knock is to save lives of Gazan Palestinian Arabs. The other knock is when an Israeli soldier lost his or her life.
