Have you no sense of decency
By Neville Berman
Joseph McCarthy was an American politician who rose to prominence in the 1950’s by alleging that hundreds of members of the government, including members of the army, the press and many other organizations were communists bent on trying to destroy America. The accusations were never substantiated, and had no basis in reality. In 1954, McCarthy was investigated by the Senate. During the investigation, McCarthy accused the lawyer of Senator Joseph Welch of having ties to communist organizations. Senator Welch replied. “Have you no sense of decency?” It was a pivotal moment in the investigation. It was clear to everyone that McCarthy was a despicable demagogue with no sensitivity to the damage that he had caused by his lies. It marked the beginning of the end of the McCarthy witch-hunt. McCarthy became an alcoholic and died three years later at the age of 48. McCarthy’s legacy of lies unfortunately continues to this day in the form of lies about Jews and Israel.
